Abstract. The history of development of esophageal cancer surgery, emergence and development of different methods of anesthesia and artificial respiration in thoracic surgery of the XIX to the beginning of the XX century is presented. The role of Russian scientists in the study of various methods of anesthesia, ways to combat the disadvantages of general anesthesia, in formation of the basic principles of surgery of the esophagus is highlighted. Prerequisites for development of further stages of anesthesia support in esophageal cancer surgery, based on the need for adequate respiratory support and full pain relief, are provided.
